Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau

Dresden, Germany · June 2026

A carpenter solved machine-made furniture in 1906, before the Bauhaus argued for it. The workshop survived two wars and the GDR and now builds interiors for superyachts and private residences whose owners it never names.

A carpenter named Karl Schmidt borrowed money in 1898 and started a workshop in Dresden. By 1906 he had commissioned Richard Riemerschmid to design Maschinenmöbel, machine-made furniture at a price a middle-class household could reach, and solved in advance the problem that defeated machine furniture of the period: a locking plywood construction that held the panels stable as humidity moved. The method preceded the Werkbund, founded in 1907 to theorise what Schmidt was already building.

In 1908 Schmidt financed Hellerau, the first garden city in Germany, and built the factory at its centre. The workshop survived the First World War, the Weimar inflation, nationalisation under the National Socialists, and the GDR, and was re-privatised in 1992. It returned to Schmidt's programme: commission-led furniture and interior work, built by hand within a precision framework.

Around 400 people across twelve nationalities now build bespoke interiors for superyachts, private residences and institutional spaces. The clients are not announced. A Hellerau interior is told by the joinery at the corners, the behaviour of the panels across temperature, and the fit of the hardware over time, the consequences of a method developed in 1906 and practised without a break since.

Hellerau is the name behind interiors most owners meet only through the result. We point clients commissioning a yacht or residence toward the workshop rather than the brochure label, and arrange the introduction.

We hold the relationships, the rooms and the access. Tell us the dates and we handle the rest.
