A thirteenth-century château on roughly a thousand hectares of lake, forest and farmland in the Charente, restored so that the land is the asset rather than the backdrop. Operated by a collection, not an owner, and better judged on the ground than the ownership.
The estate
Domaine des Etangs sits at Massignac in the Charente, a thirteenth-century château at the centre of about 2,500 acres, roughly a thousand hectares, of lakes, woodland and working farmland. Seventeen rooms and suites are in the château itself, with six métairies, the old farm cottages, restored across the grounds. The scale is the point: you can spend a day here and not see another guest, which is a different experience from a hotel that is merely large.
The land and the table
The farm is not decorative. Cattle and the vegetable gardens supply the kitchen, and the restoration treated the land as the thing being restored rather than the setting for something else. Restaurant Dyades holds a Michelin star on the estate, and there is a spa in the old mill, Le Moulin. Contemporary art is placed through the grounds and the rooms rather than hung in a corridor and forgotten.
Who runs it, and why we are saying so
Domaine des Etangs is part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, an American luxury hotel group. We are stating that plainly because this is the kind of property that gets written up as though it were owner-run, and it is not. That does not diminish it. It does mean the right test is the food, the service and the condition of the land, and on those it stands up. If what you want is a house with its owner in it, this is not that, and the honest recommendation is elsewhere in this issue.
