An 18th-century castle on the Owenmore River in a 700-acre Connemara estate, with some of the best salmon fishing in Ireland. The landscape does not perform; it is simply there.
The place
Ballynahinch is an 18th-century castle on the Owenmore River in Connemara, set in a 700-acre estate of bog, woodland and river, with some of the best salmon and sea-trout fishing in Ireland. The landscape does not perform. It is bog and mountain and the Atlantic light that arrives without announcement and changes whatever it touches.
The stay
The castle has received guests for a century on the understanding that it serves the landscape rather than the reverse. The kitchen uses produce from the kitchen garden, the river and the surrounding Connemara farms. Fishing season runs April through September, and the salmon on the Owenmore would justify the journey without the castle.
